ARIANNA RADIN From the road to the screen? The social worker profession in transition

Social workers produce and use documents though bureaucracy is often time wasting and prevent them to devote the proper attention to the patients. Technology might be of help by speeding up their work and supporting practitioners of the field to fulfil their tasks. The research draws from Lipsky’s point of view and the “street level bureaucracy” perspective. These interpretative models are jointly used to address and analyze the transition of the job “from the road to the screen”, that is the screen level bureaucracy and the social work informatics. Starting from a qualitative research carried out in the Piedmont Region, funded by the Regional Order of Social Workers, this work analyzes, on the one hand, the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the information system; on the other hands, social workers’ compliance to the available technology. Evidence shows that the two interpretative models doesn’t fit the purpose of the study, aiming to investigate the relationship between social workers and technology. Further study focussing on the same topic should try to integrate the analytical/conceptual framework by adding cultural attitudes and resistence towards changes in the job.
